The Wellesley Centers for Women (WCW) at Wellesley College, founded in 1974, is one of the largest gender-focused research-and-action organizations in the world. Scholars at the Centers conduct social science research, develop theory and publications, create curriculum, and implement training programs on issues that put women’s lives and women’s concerns at the center generating change in attitudes, practices, and public policy. The National Institute on Out-of-School Time, NIOST, which is a part of WCW has successfully brought national attention to the importance of the out-of-school time hours, influenced policy, increased standards and professional recognition, and guided community action aimed at improving the availability, quality, and sustainability of programs serving children and youth.
